Guidance Services

Overview

The PCCR Guidance and Counseling Office is a unit of the Student Affairs and Services Department that uses an integrated approach to the development of a well-functioning individual by guiding the students/clients to utilize their full potential and plan their future in accordance with their abilities, interests and needs.

Guidance Services

ADMISSIONS

In coordination with the College Registrar, this service provides the office the initial record of new and transferee students to be admitted in the college and be classified as probationary status, or be on the star section.

 

COUNSELING

This service assists students to make decisions and plans on the basis of self-understanding, accepting responsibility and actions on plans developed. The College guidance program encourages the active involvement of classroom teachers to be counselors at the classroom level because of their direct contact with the students.

  • Individual Counseling -A person to person  encounter between a professionally qualified counselor and a student wherein the latter is helped to be objective and realistic as he seeks self-understanding and self-development.
  • Peer Assistance This envisions responding to the developmental needs of the students by providing those balanced activities and experiences in participatory leadership. This also helps the students cope with the demand of the school for academic excellence.
  • Group Counseling – An opportunity to be among others with whom common problems can be shared through group interaction, one can receive feedback and caring, experience trust and acceptance and learn new ways of relating to others.
  • Weekly counseling for students
  • Monthly counseling for parents

    Examples of concerns students may bring to the guidance office include the following:

     Note: COUNSELORS also provide consultation services to parents, teachers and co-employees.

     

    TESTING

    The Guidance and Counseling Office offers a testing service to help the students gain further knowledge of their abilities, (1.Q. Aptitudes, etc.), interest and personality to increase their self-understanding towards self-improvement and direction.

     

    FOLLOW-UP

    Through evaluation and research, the needs of students are identified to which proper interventions are made. In this service, a student’s academic performance is followed up in coordination with the subject teacher.Through it, the counselor will be able to see his/her progress or take alternative steps related to his needs.

     

    INFORMATION

     This is a service that creates the students’ awareness of the need and an active desire for accurate and valid occupational, educational and social information. The activities come in the form of seminars, workshops and group guidance handled by the guidance counselors.

    Conducts research & evaluation initiatives on all the services of the office.

    Guidance Programs

    STUDENT PRACTICUM PROGRAM

     The Guidance and Counseling Office welcomes/accepts students of Psychology and other related subjects from other Colleges or Universities to have their practicum at the office.

     The interns are given the chance to apply whatever they learned from the classes. They assist the counselor in testing, interpretation and counseling.

     

    ACADEMIC MONITORING SYSTEM

     The target of the academic monitoring system {AMS) is to track and identify students with learning difficulties and help them cope and adapt to the school’s educational system. It will show relevant data pertaining to student academic deficiencies and to identify their problems on a specific subject. Particularly, it shows the student’s lacking requirements and areas that need improvement. Also, it intends to inform parents/guardians regarding the academic performance/status of the student and what needs to be done in order to help the child pass the subject’s academic requirement.

     The design of the system involves a multi-level team that includes the subject teacher, adviser, department heads, guidance counselor, discipline officers, etc. With this, it can target multidimensional factors of the students to perform within the standard of the institution and what is expected of them based on the mission, vision, and core values of the institution.

     Students that are assessed will be given a suitable intervention to avoid failing grades. With a clear record in hand, teachers and administrators can provide an appropriate intervention to help students accomplish their academic deficiencies.This could create a more conscious environment that can improve the student’s overall academic performance.

     

    Objectives:

    •   To help teachers, advisers, and administrators to formulate a corresponding action to improve student academic performance.
    •   To aid teachers and administrators visualize students that require early intervention academically
    •   To bring awareness to the students’ current academic status and to help them manage their performance and behavior properly.
    •   To serve as a basis for academic consultation and an avenue to refer students in the guidance office for academic counseling.

       

      UNDER PROBATIONARY PROGRAM

       The program aims to help students who are facing challenges academically in order for them to have the needed coping mechanism to be successful in their course requirements. The program has a combination of different strategies and methodologies to guide, assist, and help students towards the acquisition of the most essential knowledge leading to their mastery. Moreover, it uses a multi-disciplinary approach to address issues that cause the academic difficulties of the students. Parents/guardians are also involved in the program to ensure intervention that will encompass the other facets of their environment. This is to ensure that there will be a particular intervention based on the underlying issues presented by the students.

       It supports the academic department in the early identification of failed and dropout students which can start an immediate intervention on their part. A cooperative teaching strategy and methods to stimulate teaching interest will be applied by the faculty to increase the likelihood of students’ success academically. It will create a pathway for students to rise their self-commitment giving a raise to their confidence and self-esteem. Until such time that they are independent and yearning for more learning.  The data that will be generated on the program can be used as a tool to visualize and  determine the present issues of the students making the management more action oriented and success driven.

       

      Objectives:

      1. To address the academic challenges of the students with a multi-disciplinary approach to address the internal and external factors that are the source of disturbance.
      2. To prevent students from continuously being on a disadvantage academically by addressing their needs based on their individual uniqueness.
      3. To support and motivate students to persevere further towards academic excellence and being interested in succeeding.
      4. To help the academic department identify students at risk to prevent their failure academically through curriculum adjustment or teaching resources.

      General Policy:

      1. All identified students for the program are required to attend the set orientation in the beginning of the semester. Failure to attend the orientation will result in further consequences.
      2. All students’ part of the program should complete the “Under Probationary Student Form” as part of their clearance every semester to be allowed to enroll in the succeeding semester.
      3. All students with an incurred dropped or failed thirty percent of their enrolled subjects are required to have an academic consultation to their department head or academic dean with a main purpose to reduce their number of subjects to be taken.  The department heads are the ones who will decide on the number of subjects to be taken in the present semester.
      4. All students under the program are required to have an attendance in the guidance office every time they have a class. The attendance can be completed any time of the day within office hours.
      5. All probationary students are required to have at least one or two faculty consultations every month.
      6. Failure to follow the set requirements for the completion of the under probationary status will lead to community service.

         The under probationary status of the student will be waived once he/she has exemplified academically within the set period of the guidance office.

         

        Categories of Under Probationary Students

        1. Reported Fraternity Members
        2. Students who have incurred failed subjects
        3. Students with unauthorized or unexcused                                                    
        4. Students who did not meet the required points during the entrance exam.
        5. A student report card upon entrance in PCCR that has 79% GWA and below
        6. Reported students with an excessive late and absences within the half period of the semester
        7. Students who have incurred grave disciplinary sanctions
        8. ALS Passers
        9. Students with Learning Difficulty

         

        Intervention

        1. Academic  Load/Units Adjustment

        Students who have incurred multiple failed or dropped subjects (30% of his enrolled subjects) are required to seek academic advising to their department head (Dean or Associate Dean) to know what the subjects that need priority. Moreover, to know what are the subjects that will be extracted for the semester as an intervention or preventive measure to avoid failing. Students will not be allowed to take full-load or full units allowable by the school.

        1. Scheduled Faculty Consultation

        Students should have a regular consultation (once or twice a month) to his identified faculty member which can help him improve his academic standing. Also, the faculty member will serve as a focal person to clarify certain information to the student. The academic dean could also assign a regular faculty member to those identified students that needed the  consultation the most.

        1. Attendance Monitoring in the Guidance Office

        Every day that the student has a class schedule in school he/she needs to drop by in the Guidance and Counseling Office to have an attendance. There is no particular time set for this requirement but it is highly recommended before the first class of the student.

        1.       Monthly Counseling

        All  probationary students are requested to have a counseling session with the assigned guidance personnel to address other issues that are the origin of  the academic difficulty or challenge. Through counseling the student will be helped on all  aspects that concerns his current status and be an avenue to address his unresolved crisis.                                                                           

        1.   Enhancement Seminars and Workshop

        All under probationary students will automatically be part of this intervention.  It consists of a seminar/workshop and training group to help students cope, strategize, organize, and deal with the different sources they encounter that are the cause of their academic challenges. It is intended to bring them the essential and critical information that they can use or adapt to become cognizant of the methods and strategies of a successful student academically. Students need to complete two types of enhancement programs within the semester. Parents/guardians are required to attend the set orientation of the guidance office. Policies, technicalities, and interventions will be the highlights of the orientation.

         

        SCHOOL-BASED COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM

         All Under-Probationary student students who have behavioral or disciplinary concerns including those with sanctions from Discipline & CSFB and need to comply with necessary community service work/hours inside the campus. This is accomplished by being deployed to different departments/divisions as needed.

         

        COMMUNITY-BASED OUTREACH  PROGRAM

         All Under-probationary students will attend the monthly Barangay Outreach Activities to be held inside the campus. It consists of seminars/workshops and training to help students develop social awareness. It is intended for them to become more sensitive in their social responsibilities.

         

        CHARACTER REFORMATION  PROGRAM

         PCCR has produced competent leaders that are values-driven and ethically-oriented. To ensure the quality of graduates, it will stand to its mandate in molding and shaping students to become responsible and productive members of the community. In order to reform the student with an unusual and unproductive behavior that leads to disciplinary cases, they will be submitted to this program to align their paths tothe school’s direction.

         The program will be focused on the development of the individual that encompasses his morality, values, and characteristics. It aims to accompany a student towards the intended product of the school that emanates the traits of a role model, socially aware person, controlled emotions, sound judgment, and a law abiding citizen. Students that will be subjected in the program will be given a chance to restore their tarnished pride and dignity that was brought about by their misinterpretation, uncleared thoughts, and intense feelings and emotions.

         The program is specifically designed to form and remodel the appropriate traits and expected outcome of a PCCR student.  In each activity, different lessons will be learned by the student to assist him in adjusting his unnecessary beliefs and preoccupation.

         In the end of the program, students can start all over again with a better perspective and goal-driven attitude towards a successful school career. Also, this will ensure that he/she can blend with other school’s stakeholders harmoniously.

         

        Objectives

        3. Students will reflect and contemplate on the consequences of their inappropriate action or behavior.
        4.   To assist in the restructuring of the individual’s totality towards the alignment of the institution direction.
        5. To prevent unforeseen negative events that are brought about the students’ unprocessed thoughts and maladaptive behavior.
